Adriaan van Es, the coordinator of IFHHRO, was recently interviewed for a newsletter published by the Dutch section of Amnesty International. In the interview, Van Es expressed his satisfaction with the statement made recently by the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture, Manfred Nowak, that withholding medicines to people who need them should be considered a form of torture. Nowak deliberately included withholding 'cold turkey' treatment to drug addicts during forced rehabilitation, as well as denying pain medication to people who are dying and suffering immensely. IFHHRO is currently preparing a campaign against torture in health care settings, which will also pay attention to similar violations of the right to health.
