New FIGO guidelines on sterilisation
Monday, 13 February 2012 22:03
Last year, the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) published new guidelines on sterilisation and informed consent. The document acknowledges that there is ample evidence of a long history of forced and otherwise non-consensual sterilisations of women, including Roma women in Europe, women with disabilities and women living with HIV.
FIGO is the only global organisation that specifically brings gynecologists and obstetricians together, with members in 124 countries or territories worldwide. FIGO recently announced that its 20th World Congress in Rome in October will include a session on the new guidelines. This session will be moderated by the chair of FIGO's Ethics Committee. It will feature panelists who will discuss the new guidelines with those attending, in particular as they relate to incentive systems, HIV-positive women, and women living with disabilities.

More than 1,600 Palestinian prisoners have agreed to end their hunger strike in exchange for concessions by Israel, including a modification to its practice of detention without charge or trial.
As of June 1st 2012, the IFHHRO International Secretariat in Utrecht, the Netherlands, will be closed. The secretarial work of IFHHRO will continue with less capacity and with volunteers.
