IFHHRO Annual Conference 2006
Exclusion and the Right to Health: The Role of Health Professionals
From 11-13 October 2006 IFHHRO held its annual conference in Lima, Peru. The meeting was hosted by Edhucasalud, a Peruvian IFHHRO member and Regional Focal Point for Latin America. Some 170 participants, both health professionals and persons working in the area of human rights from Latin America and other regions of the world, attended the conference.
Exclusion and poverty are major obstacles to ‘the right of everyone to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health’ (Right to Health). In addition, poverty leads to discrimination and social marginalization, which in turn lead to the deterioration of health conditions. In taking up this theme the IFHHRO Annual Conference 2006 aimed to provide an opportunity to address the different ways in which exclusion and discrimination relate to the Right to Health. Health professionals can play a pivotal role in measures intended to guarantee and promote the Right to Health. The main objective of the conference was thus to promote the involvement of health professionals and their organisations in a rights-based approach to health as a means to address issues of exclusion and inequity.
The conference and the course were the first IFHHRO events to take place in Latin America, and the first activities organised by Edhucasalud as IFHHRO’s regional focal point in the region.

More than 1,600 Palestinian prisoners have agreed to end their hunger strike in exchange for concessions by Israel, including a modification to its practice of detention without charge or trial.
As of June 1st 2012, the IFHHRO International Secretariat in Utrecht, the Netherlands, will be closed. The secretarial work of IFHHRO will continue with less capacity and with volunteers.
