Physicians for Human Rights-USA has started a petition urging President Obama to stop force-feeding of prisoners on hunger strike at Guantánamo Bay. Currently, 46 of the 166 detainees being held at the prison are being force-fed.

This practice conflicts with the clinical and ethical responsibilities of the medical professionals at Guantánamo Bay and should be abandoned immediately, PHR stresses. “Force feeding can be a painful, degrading, and inhuman practice. It’s time to stand up against the barbaric practice of strapping down individuals and forcing tubes down their throats against their will.”
